DUBLIN PRIDE BANNERS
Dublin Pride Banners 2002, Dublin Fine Arts Foundation, Dublin, CA; 10 digitally generated banner designs created in collaboration with Wells Middle School students; Budget: $15,000
Ten banner designs (two distinct graphic treatments with five designs for each) were created with a group of Wells Middle School students for the city of Dublin, CA. Shown in the slides are two images from treatment #2 (double pole design).
The idea was to engage the students in an exploration of their local community to get a sense of what life in Dublin is like from their varied perspectives. The history of public art (banners, billboards, posters) and its civic role was explored, as well as basic graphic techniques, materials and forms. The students went into the community to document their surroundings, friends, and activities and we translated this material into digital imagery on the computer using basic image manipulation programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Power Point. Public domain imagery found on the internet was used in combination with the students' own photos and writings to create image/text projects and ultimately, finished designs for public art banners on a variety of themes which we generated during several brainstorming sessions.
