I just came out with a new catalog: Never Memory, Ray Beldner: Collages
The collages were made traditionally, with scissors and glue, and are assembled from select parts of pictures found in art history books. Each of the 100 collages has been paired with a poem fragment from the Greek lyric poet, Sappho, who lived during the 6th century BC. Sappho wrote of love, yearning, reflection and, in the recovered fragments of her thoughts, I see a similarity to the fragment of shapes, colors and texture in my own art work. The collages are purposely abstracted, pared down just enough to suggest an open-ended narrative where viewers can extrapolate their own meanings.
