TO RETURN AND FADE AWAY

The portrait bust was constructed of a sturdy styrofoam armature, over which I attached Tongbaechu (whole cabbage) kimchi that I prepared myself. The bust sat on a traditional white painted wood sculpture stand and was exhibited outdoors.

During this time of partial reconciliation between North and South Korea, I created a bust of General Douglas MacArthur made from kimchi, the traditional Korean food. In that way, I united our two countries by combining two of our traditional "products" into a silly temporary monument to the general that conceptually embodied his two most famous statements: "I shall return" and "old soldiers never die, they just fade away." In November, 2000, MacArthur finally returned to Korea, the country of his last famous battles, only to rot away for the duration of the exhibition.
